God gives new birth through His word; living faith receives that word, acts in love, speaks with wisdom and endures until the Lord comes.

God's gifts sustain faith in trials and bring new life; His people must receive His word and act on it.

Meet trials with joy, ask God for wisdom, and humbly receive and do the word that gave you new birth.

Hear and act 1:19–27

Receive the word with humility and show its fruit in speech, care for the vulnerable and purity.

Part 2 · Living faith acts in love 2

Faith in the glorious Lord rejects favoritism and bears fruit in obedience, as Abraham's and Rahab's did.

  1. 2
James 2: Faith without deeds is dead

Faith in the glorious Lord shows no favoritism and is never alone: living faith works, as Abraham's and Rahab's did.

Honor the poor 2:1–13

Favoritism breaks the law of neighbor-love; those who judge others must remember God's judgment.

Show your faith 2:14–26

Words without help are useless; Abraham and Rahab show that living faith acts.

Part 3 · Wisdom and undivided loyalty 3–4

God's wisdom brings peace; turn from destructive speech, selfish ambition and proud plans to humble dependence.

  1. 3
James 3: The tongue and the wisdom from above

No one can tame the tongue; true wisdom from above shows itself in humble, peaceable deeds, not envy.

Not many of you should become teachers 3:1–2 · The tongue also is a fire 3:3–6 · No man can tame the tongue 3:7–12 · Who is wise and understanding among you? 3:13–16 · The wisdom from above 3:17–18

  2. 4
James 4: Draw near to God

Quarrels spring from worldly desire; humble yourselves before God, judge no brother, and plan as those who are His.

The passions at war within you 4:1–3 · Friendship with the world 4:4–6 · Draw near to God 4:7–10 · One Lawgiver and Judge 4:11–12 · If the Lord is willing 4:13–17

The power of the tongue 3:1–12

Two kinds of wisdom 3:13–18

Jealous ambition produces disorder; wisdom from above produces humble deeds and peace.

Return to God 4:1–10

Quarrels expose worldly desire; God gives grace to those who humble themselves and draw near.

One Lawgiver and Judge 4:11–12

Slandering a brother usurps the place of the God who gave the law.

Plans under God's will 4:13–17

Life is brief and tomorrow unknown; make plans in dependence on the Lord and do the good you know.

Part 4 · Wait for the Lord and care for one another 5

Oppressors face judgment; God's people must endure, speak truthfully, pray and restore those who wander.

  1. 5
James 5: The Lord's coming is near

The oppressing rich face judgment; so be patient until the Lord comes, speak plainly, pray, and bring back the wanderer.

Like the farmer, the prophets and Job, endure with hope in the Lord's compassion and coming.

Speak truthfully 5:12

Let your words be trustworthy without evasive appeals to heaven or earth.

Pray for one another 5:13–18

Bring suffering, joy and sickness to the Lord; confess sin and pray with confidence in His power.

Turning someone back from error serves the saving purpose of God.
