Outline of Hebrews: Christ is better
God has spoken His last word in His Son, the better High Priest who offered Himself once for all: so draw near, hold fast and do not drift away.
Part 1 · God's last word: the Son above the angels 1:1–2:18
God has spoken by His Son, enthroned above the angels; so do not neglect so great a salvation, won by the Son made like His brothers.
- 1Hebrews 1: He has spoken to us by His Son
God's last word is His Son: heir, Maker and Purifier of sins, enthroned far above the angels.
He has spoken to us by His Son 1:1–4 · You are My Son 1:5–6 · Your throne, O God, endures forever 1:7–12 · Sit at My right hand 1:13–14
- 2Hebrews 2: Made like His brothers
Hold to so great a salvation: the Son became man, tasted death, and is our merciful high priest.
How shall we escape? 2:1–4 · But we see Jesus 2:5–9 · Not ashamed to call them brothers 2:10–13 · A merciful and faithful high priest 2:14–18
Spoken by His Son 1:1–4
The prophets spoke in part; the Son is God's last word, heir, Maker and Purifier, seated at God's right hand.
To which of the angels? 1:5–14
Seven Scriptures: the Son is called Son, God and Lord and is enthroned; the angels serve.
Do not drift away 2:1–4
First warning: if the law through angels was binding, neglect of the salvation spoken by the Lord cannot escape.
Made like His brothers 2:5–18
Ps 8 fulfilled in Jesus: lowered, crowned, tasting death, freeing from fear, our merciful and faithful high priest.
Part 2 · Greater than Moses: enter God's rest Today 3:1–4:13
Jesus the Son is over God's house as Moses the servant was in it; the generation that fell through unbelief warns us to enter God's rest by faith.
- 3Hebrews 3: Today, if you hear His voice
Jesus the Son outranks Moses the servant; so do not harden your hearts as Israel did in the wilderness.
Faithful as the Son over God's house 3:1–6 · Today, if you hear His voice 3:7–11 · Exhort one another daily 3:12–15 · Because of their unbelief 3:16–19
- 4Hebrews 4: A Sabbath rest for the people of God
God's rest still remains: enter it by faith Today, and hold fast to our great High Priest.
The promise of entering His rest still stands 4:1–2 · We who have believed enter that rest 4:3–7 · There remains, then, a Sabbath rest 4:8–10 · Make every effort to enter that rest 4:11–13 · Approach the throne of grace with confidence 4:14–16
Faithful as the Son 3:1–6
Moses was faithful in God's house as a servant; Christ, its builder, is faithful over it as Son, and we are His house.
Today, if you hear His voice 3:7–19
Second warning, from Ps 95: the redeemed generation fell in the wilderness through unbelief; exhort one another daily.
A Sabbath rest remains 4:1–13
God's rest, older than Canaan, is still open; believers enter by faith, and God's living word searches the heart.
Part 3 · Greater than Aaron: a priest forever like Melchizedek 4:14–7:28
Jesus is the great high priest who sympathizes, called by God, a priest forever in Melchizedek's order by God's oath; so press on and hold fast.
- 5Hebrews 5: Designated by God as high priest
Called by God and perfected through suffering, Christ is a priest forever; but the readers have grown dull.
Called by God, just as Aaron was 5:1–4 · The source of eternal salvation 5:5–10 · You need milk, not solid food 5:11–14
- 6Hebrews 6: An anchor for the soul
Press on to maturity: falling away is fatal, but God's sworn promise anchors our hope in Christ.
Let us … go on to maturity 6:1–3 · Impossible … to be restored to repentance 6:4–8 · Better things in your case 6:9–12 · He swore by Himself 6:13–15 · An anchor for the soul, firm and secure 6:16–20
Approach the throne of grace 4:14–16
Since our High Priest has passed through the heavens and sympathizes with our weakness, hold fast and draw near.
Called by God 5:1–10
Christ meets the marks of a high priest: called by God as Son and priest forever, made perfect through suffering.
Go on to maturity 5:11–6:12
Third warning: the dull must press on, for those who fall away cannot be renewed; yet better things accompany salvation.
The oath and the anchor 6:13–20
God's promise and oath to Abraham anchor our hope behind the curtain, where Jesus entered as forerunner.
A priest like Melchizedek 7:1–28
Greater than Levi, priest by oath and an indestructible life, Jesus guarantees a better covenant and saves completely.
- 7Hebrews 7: A priest forever in the order of Melchizedek
Greater than Levi, Christ is priest forever by God's oath and saves completely all who come through Him.
King of righteousness … king of peace 7:1–3 · Consider how great Melchizedek was 7:4–10 · A better hope … by which we draw near to God 7:11–19 · The guarantee of a better covenant 7:20–22 · He always lives to intercede 7:23–25 · Such a high priest truly befits us 7:26–28
Part 4 · A better covenant, sanctuary and sacrifice 8:1–10:18
In the true sanctuary our High Priest mediates the new covenant and, by His blood offered once for all, has perfected His people forever.
- 8Hebrews 8: A better covenant on better promises
Our High Priest serves in heaven's true sanctuary and mediates the new covenant, which makes the first obsolete.
We do have such a high priest 8:1–2 · A copy and shadow of what is in heaven 8:3–5 · The covenant He mediates is better 8:6–7 · I will make a new covenant 8:8–12 · He has made the first one obsolete 8:13
- 9Hebrews 9: Once for all by His own blood
Yearly animal blood never opened the way; Christ entered heaven itself once for all by His own blood.
An earthly sanctuary 9:1–5 · Only once a year, and never without blood 9:6–10 · How much more will the blood of Christ 9:11–14 · The mediator of a new covenant 9:15–22 · Once for all at the end of the ages 9:23–28
The true tabernacle 8:1–5
The main point: our High Priest is seated in heaven; the earthly priests serve a copy and shadow.
A better covenant 8:6–13
Jer 31's new covenant, with better promises, makes the first covenant obsolete.
The earthly sanctuary 9:1–10
The tent, its rooms and the yearly entry with blood showed that the way into God's presence was not yet open.
By His own blood 9:11–28
Christ entered heaven itself once for all by His own blood, inaugurating the new covenant and putting away sin.
One sacrifice for all time 10:1–18
The law's repeated shadows give way to the body offered once: the seated Priest has perfected His people.
Part 5 · Draw near, hold fast, run by faith 10:19–12:29
So draw near and hold fast, for no other sacrifice remains; live by faith like the witnesses, run looking to Jesus, and heed Him who speaks from Zion.
- 10Hebrews 10: Once for all, so let us draw near
Christ's one offering perfects forever: so draw near, hold fast, and do not shrink back.
Only a shadow of the good things to come 10:1–4 · I have come to do Your will 10:5–10 · He sat down at the right hand of God 10:11–14 · Their sins … I will remember no more 10:15–18 · Let us draw near 10:19–25 · No further sacrifice for sins remains 10:26–31 · Do not throw away your confidence 10:32–39
Let us draw near 10:19–25
By Jesus' blood and our great priest: draw near in faith, hold fast our hope, and spur one another to love.
Do not shrink back 10:26–39
Fourth warning: no sacrifice remains for those who reject the Son; remember your endurance and live by faith.
By faith 11:1–40
From Abel to the martyrs, God's people trusted the unseen promise, looking for the city God builds.
- 11Hebrews 11: By faith
Faith trusts God's unseen promise: from Abel on, believers lived and died looking to a better country.
The assurance of what we hope for 11:1–3 · Without faith it is impossible to please God 11:4–7 · The city with foundations 11:8–12 · A better country, a heavenly one 11:13–16 · God could raise the dead 11:17–22 · Disgrace for Christ 11:23–31 · The world was not worthy of them 11:32–38 · God had planned something better for us 11:39–40
Run the race 12:1–13
Run with endurance, eyes fixed on Jesus; accept hardship as the Father's loving discipline.
- 12Hebrews 12: You have come to Mount Zion
Run looking to Jesus, accept the Father's discipline, and heed Him who speaks: you have come to Zion.
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus 12:1–3 · The Lord disciplines the one He loves 12:4–11 · Strengthen your limp hands and weak knees 12:12–13 · Holiness, without which no one will see the Lord 12:14–17 · Instead, you have come to Mount Zion 12:18–24 · A kingdom that cannot be shaken 12:25–29
Not Sinai but Zion 12:14–29
Fifth warning: be holy, not like Esau; you have come to Zion, so do not refuse Him who speaks from heaven.
Part 6 · Outside the camp: counsels, benediction and greetings 13:1–25
Acceptable worship lived out: love, purity, contentment and steadfastness; go to Jesus outside the camp; the benediction of the great Shepherd.
- 13Hebrews 13: Outside the camp
Love, be pure and content; Jesus never changes: go to Him outside the camp and offer praise.
Continue in brotherly love 13:1–6 · The same yesterday and today and forever 13:7–9 · Let us go to Him outside the camp 13:10–16 · Obey your leaders 13:17–19 · That great Shepherd of the sheep 13:20–21 · My word of exhortation 13:22–25
Brotherly love 13:1–6
Hospitality, care for prisoners, honored marriage and contentment, for God will never leave His people.
Outside the camp 13:7–19
The unchanging Christ suffered outside the gate: go to Him, bear His reproach, offer praise, and obey your leaders.
The God of peace 13:20–25
The God of peace, who raised the great Shepherd, equips His people; a word of exhortation, news and greetings.
